Visiting Blue-winged Teal

For some reason, every spring we seem to have a pair of blue-winged teal that visit us for a week or so on their way north.  Their visit seems late this year, but then maybe it's just that everything else is so early!  (I have to wonder if it's the same pair, too, or if it's just coincidence that I see a pair each spring.)

The teal are usually very spooky, but I was able to sneak up on them yesterday and get a couple photos before they flushed.  I appreciate their generosity in letting me capture their image for my photo album.

Hello. The shrub in my side garden is Three-Leaf Sumac 'Rhus trilobata.' I got it from High Country Gardens. The awesome fall color it is suppose to get hasn't happened for me. I don't know if it doesn't get enough sun there or it's the soil or what, but it is an interesting shape and I do prune away branches that reach out into the path. I like how it fits in the space.

GonSS, thank you for identifying it for me! That makes sense. As far as the lack of fall color, I'd vote for insufficient sunlight - but I love the form they are developing.
