T...Oh, GoSS, good point about the no till farming! They don't do much of that down here in Sedgwick County and I'd forgotten how much they did further north. That, combined with buffer zones along creeks and waterways can make BIG differences!

Congrats on the solar panel! That's exciting! We've been talking about getting a setup, but haven't done it yet. We do have geothermal heat and air conditioning, so our electrical use is lower than it would be otherwise.

By the way, I think worm bins would definitely count!

You've toted up an impressive list. Awesome!

CynthiaGaia Gardener:https://www.blogger.com/profile/00692281131036600613noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24376388.post-19731181793521200832015-01-31T19:33:05.170-08:002015-01-31T19:33:05.170-08:00Well that was interesting.
Cute that you claimed...Well that was interesting.
Cute that you claimed the naming of your daughter as meeting one of the predictions.
Composting in the house--do those worm bins count? I don't have one but I know people who do. We compost outside.
We use stainless steel canteens to carry many beverages (don't try them with soda unless you want a cola shower) and faithfully recycle other containers. We have a great curbside recycling service here. Our landfill is closed. The city has to haul trash away to other places so recycling keeps our city's costs down which I still educate people about, but we have a good recycling percentage.
We use a lot more washable items.
As for the sunblock. Yes when we'll be out for a long time, but no for general exposure or even short jaunts in the garden. I want the vitamin D.
With you on not knowing about some of the bigger industrial changes.
With our water issues, we're doing better on the landscaping in an environmentally safe way. Our local extension agent spent a lot of time last year offering information in every way she could about lawn reduction and water conservation.
A lot more farmers use no till methods now which saves moisture and really cuts the need for chemical fertilizers. I know many who do this. There is also a lot of education about buffer zones around streams and rivers to keep chemicals and animal waste from getting into the water. A coworker's wife's job with K-State's watershed program does this in our area.
We keep the pesticide use at our home to a minimum. I spray for ash lilac borers and when ever I find a black widow spider. Although, we didn't find any in the garage this past fall. Normally, they move in to the garage about November. We use termite stations outside with a local service and glue traps inside for the crickets that seem to like our basement.
We are all about CFLs at our house and we purchased solar panels in our electric company's solar array which just started generating power Thursday! Our local university put up two wind turbines and is seeing big savings. I like the windmills, but don't want them in certain places.
Cars do have more options. Need more charging stations for people who have to drive long distances in our state to be covered.
That's not all the points mentioned, but some I'm aware of.
I know there is much to be done and people who don't seem to care what damage they cause as long as they make a dollar or save a dollar, but I also know that by doing what we can do personally we have influenced others and that adds up.
Thanks for sharing the article. Always interesting to see if "predictions" hold true.
Gardener on Sherlock Streethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11367115529793643362noreply@blogger.com
